Central Division De-Edge Vintage Jerseys

I'm back with part two of the vintage jersey program for my De-Edge series, this time for the Central Division.  Also, as you can see, the vintage header at the top of the page is now onto my shield logo.

Chicago Blackhawks Vintage Set:
The Blackhawks wore these jerseys won they won the Stanley Cup in 1961.

Colorado Avalanche Vintage Set:
These are the classic Avalanche jerseys, but specifically from 1999-2007 (darker shade of burgundy).  They won the Cup in 2001 wearing this set.

Dallas Stars Vintage Set:
The Stars wore these jerseys 1995-99.  The Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999 when these were their home and road jerseys (although they did wear their third when they won the Cup).

Minnesota Wild Vintage Set:
These are the Wild's original jerseys.

Nashville Predators Vintage Set:
I also went with the Predator's original jerseys.

St. Louis Blues Vintage Set:
The Blues wore these jerseys from 1968-73.  The went to the Stanley Cup final three times during that time.

Winnipeg Jets Vintage Set:
This may surprise some people, but I went with the Jets current jerseys.  I wasn't going to throwback to the original Jets since they are a different franchise, so my only other option was Atlanta Thrashers jerseys.

Once again you can let me know if you think my choices are good or bad.  Thanks for visiting!

Dallas Stars De-Edge

Once again I'm going a bit out of order, skipping the Blue Jackets and making a Stars concept.  I promise though, I won't rename the Blue Jackets in this series.  Also, like the Hurricanes De-Edge concept, you can think of this as my "fix" of the new Stars jerseys.

Dallas Stars:
I started by making the road jersey, with the striping pattern heavily inspired by Dallas' first jerseys.  I then made a matching green jersey, used the new Texas logo as a shoulder patch, and gave the numbers an outline.

Have a good day!

My Thoughts: New Star Rising

Welcome back to another post on SG-94, the second today (I think this is the first day with two posts on this blog).  Here I'll be talking about the Stars new logos and jerseys.

I'll start off by discussing the new logos that we leaked earlier.  I like the new D-Star logo, it's better than their previous logo, but it's not perfect.  I do like the new colour scheme, the kelly green looks great paired with the black, white and silver.  I don't miss the gold at all (I have made six Stars concepts since I started this blog, and only three included gold).  My biggest complaint about the logo is those little notches where the star connects to the D (the right and bottom portions of the star).  Those just look awkward and poorly rendered in my opinion.  I also don't like how the D is angled more than the star, which you can see if you compare the right side of the D to line created by the bevel on the top portion of the star.  They matched the angle of D to the slope between the top and bottom-left portions of the star instead.  Another minor thing that bugs me is that the outside outline changes colour depending on the background, which is something I think a logo shouldn't have to do.  Overall I'd give this new logo a 8/10.

The new secondary logo isn't nearly as good as the primary.  It doesn't add anything to the identity, it's just the D-Star from the primary logo in a circle with the team's name written around the edge.  Too many NHL team's use these lazy roundels as secondary logos.  It's also a little odd that the D-Star doesn't have the black outline from the primary logo.  I wouldn't give this more than a 6/10.

We also got a look at another logo which will be on the pants.  I like this logo much better than the roundel logo.  It represents the team's location nicely, and it just looks better than a lazy circle.  Again though, I wish the D-Star part of the logo was surrounded by a black outline like the main logo.  This logo also gets an 8/10.

And now on to the jerseys.  I'm a big fan of the white jersey, it has a nice look to it, and it doesn't look like any other current hockey team.  The green jersey on the other hand looks too close to the Chicago Blackhawks home jersey in my opinion (which is made worse by the Blackhawks St. Patrick's Day jerseys).  I do really like the fact that the jersey is green, especially the bright shade of kelly green the Stars used, I just wished the jersey was a bit more different than the Blackhawks jersey.  Even if they just moved the hem stripes up, so the hem was green and not white (matching the arm stripes), then it would be different enough for me.  Getting past that though, the rest of the look is nice.  I like the "Stars" and "Dallas" wordmarks in the collars.  Overall this is a huge improvement over the Stars previous jerseys, and I'd rate them an 8/10 overall (home jersey 7/10, road jersey 9/10).

Feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comments.  Also stay tuned for a De-Edge concept tomorrow.

Stars Jersey Prediction

Hello all.  The poll about a SG-94 Google+ page ended yesterday, with two people thinking it's a good idea and two people who didn't think it was a good idea.  I decided to make a page, and I don't expect it to be very popular, but I thought I might as well make it anyways.  Here is the link to the page, and you can also get to it by clicking the Google+ icon on the side of the page.

Now to the exciting part of this post.  As I'm sure all of you already know, last Thursday the Dallas Stars leaked their new logos.  I'm a fan of the new primary logo, and the new colours (more detailed opinion post coming up after the jersey are unveiled).  I decided to make a prediction of what I expect the new jersey to look like.

Dallas Stars Prediction:
According to some rumors, the new jerseys will have a classic look, and the home jersey will be green.  I've also heard they will have lace-up collars, and the white jersey will have a shoulder yoke but the green jersey won't.  The above concepts are my take on those rumors.

It will be fun to see how similar these are to the actual jerseys.  They'll probably be very different.

Final Fashion Jerseys

Here are the last two fashion jerseys I'm going to do.  After these I'm moving on to other concepts.

Dallas Stars:
This is the Stars current (not for long) home jersey recoloured green.

Edmonton Oilers:
And this is the Oilers current road jersey in the team's copper colour used from the 1996-2012.

Lots of Stars

With the Dallas Stars getting new uniforms next year I thought I'd make some new concepts for them.

Concept 1:
This is my idea for Dallas if they want to separate their look from their time in Minnesota.  Black and gold are dropped from the colour scheme in favour of silver.

Concept 2:
For this concept I took inspiration from both the North Stars 1988-91 jerseys and Dallas' "Star" jerseys.  If I had to make a prediction, I would guess the Stars go with something closer to this (but with a new logo).

Concept 3:
I also made this concept, which is a modernization of my favourite Stars/North Stars look.

Stars Rebrand

Sorry for the lack of posts this last week.  I've been busy lately and haven't been able to find the time to make any concepts.  Hopefully there will be more posts up soon.

Dallas Stars:  This is my entry into HJC's Dallas Stars Rebrand Competition.  I tried to make it look western, but still connecting to the history of the franchise by using a brown, green, and vintage white colour scheme.  The rest of the concept is pretty basic.

Feel free to leave any thoughts you may have in the comments.

NHL Redesign Updates

Here are some updates suggested by the folks at CCSLC.

Dallas Stars:  I changed the inside of the star to white on the green jersey.  Here is the original concept.

Nashville Predators:  I changed the collar on the home and roads to what they have now.  Original concept.

New York Islanders:  I brightened the orange and changed up the striping on the road jersey.  Original concept.

New York Rangers:  I thickened the white space between the stripes on the road jersey.  Original concept.

Phoenix Coyotes:  I switched the shoulder patches.  The logo that was on the third is now on the primary jerseys, and vice-versa.  Original concept.

Tampa Bay Lightning:  I added a blue outline to the numbers on the home and road.  Original concept.

Vancouver Canucks:  I switched the third jersey to the jersey that was on my "We Need More GREEN!!! " post.  Original concept.

So now all the teams are final.  I will post some bonus jerseys in the next day or two.

Green and White Stars

Just a quick post today for this Stars concept.

Dallas Stars:  I wanted to try a Dallas Stars concept that only used green and white.  I edited the logo to have a bigger gap between the inside and the outside of the star, and then made the striping pattern match.

Expect the next NHL Redesign post sometime around Monday.

My Concept History

A special post today about the history of my concepts.  The execution is pretty bad on some of these, but please don't laugh.

I first starting making concepts near the end of 2009, when my local minor hockey association got new jerseys.  These "concepts" were basically me recolouring jersey from The Hockey Uniform Database, like this Team USA concept from January 2010.

A few months later I found the website Icethetics, and I took someone's concept to make a better template.  Here is a St. Louis Blues concept I made in May 2010, using that template.

Later that year I found a cleaner template, and decided to attempt an NHL series.  That series was very incomplete, I only made concepts for about half the teams, and many of the concepts were incomplete.  This Canucks concept from July 2010, and this Ducks concept from November 2010, are from that NHL series.

By the beginning of 2011 I had started using a brand new template.  This new template was a lot harder to use, but I thought it looked better.  I also didn't put numbers on my jerseys, because the numbers for the other template were to small.  This Predators jersey from February 2011, was my prediction of what their new jerseys for 2011-12 would look like.

I was still using the older template as well, and in March, when it looked like the Coyotes might move to Winnipeg, I sent Icethetics this concept.  This was my first concept posted on the Internet.
Image from Icethetics

Then two months later, when we knew the Thrashers were moving to Winnipeg, I sent in this concept to Hockey Jersey Concepts.  This was my first concept on HJC.

By summer 2011 I almost quit making concepts.  It just took too much time to create a concept on the template I was using.  Finally, by the end of August, I decided to switch back to my old template, and use my name and number on the back to save time.  I also made an attempt at an NHL series.  This Sabres concept from September 2011 was from that series (which I didn't complete).

For Christmas 2011 I got a new Laptop, and downloaded Paint.net (previously I was using MS Paint).  I also added a double outline to my concepts, and started posting concepts to CCSLC.  This Stars concept was from January 2012.

Most recently I started another NHL series, which I will complete, and I started this blog.  I hope you enjoyed reading about the history of my concepts.  The next NHL Redesign will be posted in a few days.

More NHL Redesign

Here are some more NHL Redesign concepts today with Colorado, Dallas, and Detroit.  Also I don't know if anyone noticed, but I changed the template of the blog slightly.  I wasn't really happy with how it was before.

Colorado Avalanche:  I added navy to their colour scheme, and removed black.  I also brought back the mountain-stripes on the hems.  The third jersey is only slightly different than their current third, mostly switching black for navy.

Dallas Stars:  Green is used as the primary colour (obviously), with a simple striping pattern.  The third is an updated version of their current home jersey.

Detroit Red Wings:  The home and road have very minor changes.  I included a throw-back jersey instead of a third jersey, because you can't really mess with the Red Wings look.

Up next are Edmonton, Florida, and LA.

We Need More GREEN!!!

As you can probably tell from the colours on this blog, I like the colour green.  So you can see how I would be disappointed that there's only one green jersey in the NHL. It's not even a primary jersey, it's a third jersey.  That's only 15 games out of 1,230 NHL games in a season, that's only 0.012%.  That's terrible!!!

So today's post I am trying to fix that.  This post is the first of my occasional opinion posts (labelled My Thoughts), where I express my point of view on hockey jerseys and logos.

*Note:  The concepts in today's posts are only there as a visual aid, they aren't necessarily what I'd do.

The first team I think needs more green is the Dallas Stars.  Not only would it make them look much better, it would make sense historically.  They wore green for ten years in Dallas (1997-2007), and an additional 24 years in Minnesota (1967-1991).  Good news is that Dallas could be making a big change in 2013-2014, hopefully it's more green.
Dallas' current home jersey coloured green (with logos switched too).

Another team that could use a green home jersey is the Minnesota Wild.  In my opinion, their best home jersey was their 2000-2007 green jersey.  I like their red jersey too, I just think it's better as a third jersey.
Minnesota's 2000-2007 green jersey edgified.

The Vancouver Canucks are a third team that could use more green.  I know they haven't ever had a green jersey, but imagine how good a green third jersey could look.  I think it would look much better than their current third jersey, which I don't like.
An old concept, inspired by the Vancouver Millionaires.

We all know that the New Jersey Devils wear a throwback jersey on St. Patricks day, my question is why don't the Maple Leafs?  They were literally called the St. Pats before they were renamed the Maple Leafs.  It would also be another team wearing green, even if it's only for one game.
A 1919-20, 1921-22 St. Pats throwback jersey.

This last idea is a bit out there, but I have seen it suggested before.  It's the Anaheim Ducks wearing green and orange.  These colours are supposed to be more duck-like.  Hey I'll listen to any idea if it means more green.
Re-coloured version of their current third jersey.

What does everyone else think.  Am I correct or completely nuts?  Did I miss any teams?  Let me know.
