Stadium Series Predictions

2016 Stadium Series:
A couple weeks ago I posted my prediction for next year's Winter Classic jerseys, today I'm doing the same for the Stadium Series.  I think the jerseys will once again be modern, and follow a template that is used for all four teams.  I also kept the the giant sleeve numbers and giant pant logos from this years uniforms.  I decided against white pants, instead using white gloves for the road teams.  Also gone are the chrome or carbon fiber logo, but that's mostly just wishful thinking.  The sleeve stripes are angled so that when the arms are down at an angle the stripes will look more vertical to match the stripes on the torso.

Also, I've added a square yolk variation of my new template to the templates page.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Ducks and Oilers Guest Concepts, and an Avalanche Concept

Anaheim Ducks, by Jake88:
We have a couple of alternate jersey concepts by Jake88 for today's post.  As you can see the first concept is an orange third jersey for the Ducks.  For a long time I didn't think the Ducks should have an orange jersey, but since I've seen their Stadium Series jersey I've changed my mind.  The striping looks nice, Jake88 did one thing that I think is very important in a Ducks concept which is keeping the gold from touching orange in the striping.  I'm not a big fan of the shoulder yoke, in my opinion if a shoulder yoke has a sharp corner then the outline shouldn't go all the way around (look at the Blues pre-edge jerseys if you don't get what I mean), and I'd rather it didn't cut up to avoid the Reebok logo in the back.  The number font also isn't my favourite, as I think the angled part of the four is too thin.
Grade:  B

Edmonton Oilers, by Jake88:
Now this concept was Jake88's entry into HJC's Steel Drop Competition held a few weeks ago.  I love the modern striping, it works great with modern Steel Drop logo.  I especially like the stripes on the front of the yoke.  The "OILERCITY" hanger effect is also really cool, it's great when concepts have little details like that.
Grade:  A

Colorado Avalanche:
This is kind of an update of my Avalanche De-Edge concept.  I realize now I used way to much light blue on the original concept, so I minimized it for this update.  I also used a mountain design like what was on the Avalanche's original jerseys, but with arm stripes instead of an arm length yoke.  When creating this concept I made a version on the Reebok Edge template and also the vintage template, you can see the vintage version on this Icethetics concept post.

Have a good day!

Central Division De-Edge Vintage Jerseys

I'm back with part two of the vintage jersey program for my De-Edge series, this time for the Central Division.  Also, as you can see, the vintage header at the top of the page is now onto my shield logo.

Chicago Blackhawks Vintage Set:
The Blackhawks wore these jerseys won they won the Stanley Cup in 1961.

Colorado Avalanche Vintage Set:
These are the classic Avalanche jerseys, but specifically from 1999-2007 (darker shade of burgundy).  They won the Cup in 2001 wearing this set.

Dallas Stars Vintage Set:
The Stars wore these jerseys 1995-99.  The Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999 when these were their home and road jerseys (although they did wear their third when they won the Cup).

Minnesota Wild Vintage Set:
These are the Wild's original jerseys.

Nashville Predators Vintage Set:
I also went with the Predator's original jerseys.

St. Louis Blues Vintage Set:
The Blues wore these jerseys from 1968-73.  The went to the Stanley Cup final three times during that time.

Winnipeg Jets Vintage Set:
This may surprise some people, but I went with the Jets current jerseys.  I wasn't going to throwback to the original Jets since they are a different franchise, so my only other option was Atlanta Thrashers jerseys.

Once again you can let me know if you think my choices are good or bad.  Thanks for visiting!

Avalanche De-Edge Third

Colorado Avalanche Third:
The home and road jerseys I did for the Avalanche were fairly modern, so I wanted to do a more traditional third jersey.  It is loosely inspired by the Nordiques jerseys, with simple striping, and blue (both navy and light blue) as the only colour used anywhere besides the team's primary logo.  I used the "Colorado" script on the front of the jersey because I thought it worked better with the more traditional design.  The gloves and pants are the same as what is used with the primary jerseys, but there is a new helmet.

Full Set:
Here's a look at the full set.  As you can see the Avalanche become the first team in this series to have three non-white jerseys.

Thanks for visiting.

Colorado Avalanche De-Edge

I'm kind of going alphabetically for this De-Edge series, but I was a bit stuck on good ideas for Carolina and Chicago for so I skipped a bit ahead to Colorado.

Colorado Avalanche:
I thought the Avalanche could use an updated colour scheme, so I got rid of black and silver, and used a navy and light blue.  That allowed me to experiment with a light blue road jersey.  For the striping pattern I wanted to use a mountain theme, but without copying their original jerseys.  Afterwards I realised it looked very similar to this concept by Justin C, so he gets credit for the idea.

Thanks for visiting.

My Least Favourite jerseys

For my phase 2 post on HJC I talked about my top five favourite jerseys in the NHL right now.  I thought I'd post here on SG-94 about my least favourite jerseys in the NHL right now.  This time though I'm posting a Top Ten list (I have lots to complain about).  I also have one rule, that I can only have one least favourite jersey per-team.  Remember that these are just my opinions, so feel free to disagree with me.  Also, all the images in this post are from Icethetics, and the titles of each jersey are links to their page on The (unofficial) NHL Uniform Database.

10: Boston Bruins Third
(Image from Icethetics)
I dislike the Bruins third jersey for a few reasons.  First of all, they used black socks for the first in franchise history.  Not only does it ruin tradition, I also think it just looks bad.  The sleeve striping appears lazy to me (just copied from their home jersey), and the lack of hem-stripes look bad on this jersey.  My final complaint is the logo, which I think looks much better as shoulder-patch.  The bruins colour-scheme still looks great though, which helps this jersey a bit.

9: Anaheim Ducks Third
(Image from Icethetics)
Most people are a fan the Ducks third jersey, but I think it's an eyesore.  The large orange area at the top of the socks are my least favourite part, it stands out way too much.  I also think all the orange piping is unnecessary and just clutters up the jersey up.  I am a fan of the logos though, which saves this jersey from being lower down on this list.

8: Ottawa Senators Road
(Image from Icethetics)
I'm not a fan of over-used templates, and this jersey template is one of the worst.  It's used by the Senators and Penguins (and formerly the Lightning).  I think the Penguins use this template slightly better, which is why I chose the Senators for this list.  Another thing I don't like about this jersey is the ugly font used for the numbers.  The side-profile logo would also be nice to see on a Senators jersey, instead of the front-facing logo on this jersey.

7: Calgary Flames Road
(Image from Icethetics)
During the Reebok Edge takeover in 2007, the flames went from having one of my favourite jersey sets to one of my least favourite.  I don't mind the side-panels, but I don't like the piping, the flag shoulder-patches, or the trim at the hem.  The jersey is just too busy, if it were simplified it might not be on this list.  Also the side panels on the home jersey match the pants better, which is why the road jersey makes this list instead of the home.

6: Florida Panthers Home
(Image from Icethetics)
I was very excited when I heard that the Panthers were returning to red for the colour of their home jersey.  But when it was revealed I was very disappointed.  The jersey has major contrast problems, due to the lack of white.  Also the striping is kind of boring, since it was just copied from their previous jersey.  The logos are still nice though, and the use of more red is good.

5: Tampa Bay Lightning Third
(Image from Icethetics)
The Lightning have three of my least favourite jerseys right now.  I had to pick just one, and the "Bolts" word-mark is what causes this jersey to make the list.  In my opinion, using a nickname as a logo is very amateurish and should never happen in the NHL.  The piping also makes this jersey look bad.  The actual striping is good though, which is why this jersey isn't even lower down on this list.

4: Pittsburgh Penguins Third
(Image from Icethetics)
One trend I really hate is the use of vintage white, including on the Penguins third jersey here at number four on the list.  I also don't like the trend of faux-back jerseys for the Winter Classic, which I think this jersey helped become a trend.  One other thing, the stripes on this jersey seem a bit too large, in my opinion.  This jersey also replaced a nice throwback jersey, which is another reason I might dislike it.

3: Columbus Blue Jackets Third
(Image from Icethetics)
This jersey would be so much better with normal white.  As it is, the modern elements used on this jersey (unique number font, use of silver), and the vintage white just don't mix.  Speaking of the number font, I don't think the super-boxy numbers work.  They're just too square.  The use of their regular logo on the helmet is also an odd choice.

2: Colorado Avalanche Home
(Image from Icethetics)
Another team that went from having great jerseys to terrible jerseys during the Reebok Edge takeover.  Now they are wearing a basic "colour by numbers" template.  The shoulder-yoke, similar to the Panthers jersey, has major contrast problems.  I also dislike the use of black equipment, since black is used so little anywhere else.

1: New York Islanders Third
(Image from Icethetics)
In my opinion, this is not only the worst jersey right now, but also hands-down the worst jersey of all-time.  First of all, the Black-For-Black-Sack (or BFBS) is stupid and looks ugly.  Then replacing white with grey makes the jersey look dark and muddy.  On top of that, the Islanders just stole the striping from the Ducks third jersey.  And then what did they use for a logo?  That's right, a boring script on top of the player's number.  They also thought it would be a good idea to use lace-up collars with such a modern jersey template.  Another thing, they just used the blue helmets from their home jersey, which looks out of place and weird.  Finally, the diamond pattern formed with the pants (which I'll admit is creative), looks kind of odd.  All those things are why this jersey is at number one on this list, and also why I would consider it the worst jersey off all time.

What do you think?  Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Colorado Revisited

This is the first post of a new series on SG-94 where I'll revisit some of my older concepts to (hopefully) make them better.  Up first is Colorado.

Original Concept:  This concept was created in fall of 2011.  I wanted to use a double blue colour scheme because I thought it was colder (avalanches happen in snow).  I also wanted to create a new mountain striping pattern.  (P.S.  Check out what my logo looked like back then).

Revisited Concept:  To improve this concept I did a few things.  First of all, I added burgundy back in to keep with the Avalanche's tradition.  I also changed up the striping pattern to something I think works better.

Bonus Concept:  I then made this concept, which I think would fit better with the Avalanche's current home and road jerseys.

More NHL Redesign

Here are some more NHL Redesign concepts today with Colorado, Dallas, and Detroit.  Also I don't know if anyone noticed, but I changed the template of the blog slightly.  I wasn't really happy with how it was before.

Colorado Avalanche:  I added navy to their colour scheme, and removed black.  I also brought back the mountain-stripes on the hems.  The third jersey is only slightly different than their current third, mostly switching black for navy.

Dallas Stars:  Green is used as the primary colour (obviously), with a simple striping pattern.  The third is an updated version of their current home jersey.

Detroit Red Wings:  The home and road have very minor changes.  I included a throw-back jersey instead of a third jersey, because you can't really mess with the Red Wings look.

Up next are Edmonton, Florida, and LA.
